Writer's Block: Vampires, again?

Jul. 19th, 2010 | 01:18 am

Is there a TV show that everyone around you watches that you really don't get or like? If so, what is it? To what do you ascribe the odd fascination?

ooh child. i don't get anything. i don't get seinfeld or friends or true blood or buffy or colbert or stewart or lost or anything involving joel mchale. or mad men or big bang theory or himym or the sopranos [although admittedly that's because of the whole sitting-on-a-dog thing. that made me ill].

i'm not being elitist. i wish i could enjoy those shows, because i feel like i'm missing out on something that gives so many people a great deal of pleasure.

it's not even that i'm difficult to amuse. it can't be; i laughed like a hyena watching jeremy clarkson throw the top gear director's car keys over an electric fence. but most things i just can't get into.

i have no particular theory on why people love these shows so much. but if they do, good for them. i'm glad there's something on that they like. as long as they don't become the sort of people who stayed home from work for a week after the lost finale to recover emotionally or act like jackasses toward people who don't share their enthusiasm, it's cool.

[this might also be an appropriate time to point out that i've never read a harry potter book in full and have never seen any of the movies. again, i'm not necessarily proud of that fact, nor do i think i'm better than anyone who has. i tried to read one of the books once and wasn't partial to jkr's writing style. but maybe i'll try again. i do adore that white owl.]

i am not enjoying the effect that this prolonged illness, and the associated irritability, have had on my self-censorship. seriously, i haven't been such an ass on the internet since i was about 13. i literally post whatever enters my mind without any regard for people's feelings. it's awful and i feel really bad and i wish i could stop.

i mean, even when i think i've douched out hxc it's mild compared to most people in the comms i read. and i always apologise. but that's no excuse.

don't say rest in peace in your prayers

after meaning to for months, i finally changed my username. the old one was a cluedo reference but sometimes i was afraid it looked a little like a fursona for my liking. which... just no.

the new one comes from the song currently stuck in my head. what can i say, if it's good enough to play while chuck bass almost jumps off a building it's good enough for livejournal.

 things i have done today:

- lurk ontd for hours

- read about carnivorous plants

- try to develop an affection for folk metal, fail

- discover the existence of goddess bunny, wish i hadn't*

- discover the existence of the movie "may", REALLY wish i hadn't

- listen to the gin blossoms jacking the buzzcocks' swag...

...then listen to rain machine jacking stevie wonder's

i hope this doesn't last longer than a week.

*it's not his physical condition that bothers me, it's everything else. i know it's un-pc but i can't help it.

Writer's Block: Wait, that's not how it happened

Jul. 6th, 2010 | 09:30 pm

How do you feel when an adapted film's story deviates from the original material?

if it's an adaptation of a book i love? raaaaaage. those agatha christie adaptations from the past few years - the ones with all sorts of lame plot devices inserted because the originals weren't ~sensational enough? the fucking ridiculous mother-selling-children-into-slavery subplot with natalie dormer in "why didn't they ask evans"? david hunter impregnating his sister then giving her an abortion sans anaesthetic before blowing a house to kingdom come in "taken at the flood"? um, no. you'd better believe i bring my a+ christie stan game and wail helplessly at the television whenever that shit comes on.

obviously i have absolutely no problem with the above topics featuring in other films. but they weren't in the books and if i watch an adaptation of one of them it's because i want to see the book brought to life without having to be updated because someone finds it too tame for a modern audience.

as a janet evanovich fan of approximately eight years i'm also peeved that katherine heigl - as nice as that blind item about the dog shelter was - is going to play stephanie plum. fuck that noise.
